The Bed Book

Yesterday I took a break from watching the video for "Ella es bonita" over and over and daydreaming abot how wonderful my life would be if I was as tiny and cute as Natalia Lafourcade to talk to my friend Adam! Aside from having an adorable name, he reminded me of this children's book that I used to love when I was little, but he had never heard of it and I couldn't remember what it was called. I had a sneaking suspicion that it was The Bed Book, but when I looked it up and saw that it was written by Sylvia Plath, I thought that I must have been wrong because I've seen that movie with Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig, and she kills herself in the oven at the end and that is decidedly not adorable.

But I just asked my mom about it, and she said that it really was The Bed Book and that she had always really liked the book even though it creeped her out that Sylvia Plath had written it. Apparently she took a break from intense poetry and her not-very-nice husband and repeated suicide attempts to write an adorable book for her children!!

The Bed Book is all about these three siblings and different kinds of adorable beds! There is a bounceable bed, a pocket-size bed, a jet-propelled bed, and, my favorite: a snack bed. The snack bed is the only bed I actually remember, because I want one more than anything in the whole universe. I mean, a bed that has a button for you to push that makes delicious food come out of it on a conveyor belt?!!!?! That is the most wonderful thing I can think of. I'm sure that when my mom was reading it to me, my little child-brain was internally screaming, "WHY IS THAT BED NOT MINE?!" over and over. Because, really, who wouldn't absolutely love to have a snack bed?!

Love, Jillian

  1. I NEED this book. I actually really like Depressed Suicidal Sylvia Plath, but it would be nice to have some writing by I Love My Children Sylvia Plath too. Actually, there is some of that besides The Bed Book, mostly poems, and definitely some in her unabridged (except for the really interesting ones her douchebag husband burned from right before she killed herself) journals, buuuut nothing is quite like a storybook you write for your kids.

I haven't read it yet, but H.D., another sometimes depressed ladywriter who sometimes writes about things like suicide (though she wasn't suicidal), wrote a children's book called Hedgehog. I will let you know if that one is adorable once I finally read it.

  2. i finally got the book! after reading your post months and months ago, i finally remembered to order a copy online. original copies are super rare and a billion dollars (or slightly less,) but i found one for cheap. it's a collection of three of her stories: the bed book, the it-doesn't-matter suit, and mrs. cherry's kitchen. i agree, the bed book (and the snack bed!) are the best.
